There are some people that assume that, because Jiraiya is in his fifties, he is old. But Jiraiya has always had a very interesting tendency to measure age in achievements, in successes and failures; and so, having failed to do so many things in his life, he considers himself to be full of enough youth to rival even Maito Gai’s standards. “Youthful” isn’t the word he’d use (spandex isn’t really his thing) but he is younger in spirit than some of his colleagues can stomach. Not that many of them are alive anymore.

Indeed, Jiraiya has lived through many decades of love and loss; the death of his student, one Namikaze Minato some nineteen years ago, and the defection of his best friend Orochimaru sometime longer ago (if you can bring yourself to imagine) have shaped him into the man he is: boisterous but aching, handsome but sad, wise but young and dreaming, strong but not yet as strong as he must be. He aspires in a way that most people his age do not aspire – he’s still dreaming, still working toward his goals (getting Tsunade into bed with him; getting Orochimaru back on their side or, at the very least, six feet under the ground; raising Naruto, his seregate grandson).

A romanticist and a charmer, Jiraiya’s heart is young in the way his mind is not – he’s seen too much, like most yakuza of his make, and he’s never going to unsee it. He’s long accepted that. But he accepts very little else, and if those around him do not see it his way, there’s always more miles to add a new adventure into the storybook of Jiraiya’s life. That’s his philosophy, really: always do what will make the best story later. It’s never failed him yet.
